What Music to Choose for Your Wedding Film, and What You Risk Online

Wedding film music gives the film all its emotion, and it is also the question we hear most: can we use our first dance song, and what happens if we post the film online? Here is what to know before editing begins.

Why music can be a problem

The songs you hear on the radio belong to artists, record labels and publishers. Using them in a video without a licence is not the same as listening to them. Platforms know this, and they have built systems to detect protected music in the videos people post.

What happens on YouTube

When a video contains a protected song, YouTube detects it automatically and generates a claim. The rights holder then decides what to do: block the video, monetize it or simply track its views. For music, monetization is the most common choice. Ads run on your video and the revenue usually goes to the rights holder, not to you.

A video longer than three minutes generally stays viewable despite the claim. Short videos (Shorts) longer than one minute with an active claim, however, are blocked. The good news: a claim affects the video, not your channel. You can also trim the affected passage, mute the sound or replace the music, and the claim goes away.

What happens on Facebook and Instagram

Personal accounts can draw on a large music library. Business accounts are limited to a smaller collection meant for commercial use. When a protected song ends up in a post, the sound can be muted, sometimes long after it was posted. Repeated violations can lead to restrictions on the account. Rules change over time: always check the current terms of the platform where you post.

Watching the film with family is different

If the film is meant to be watched at home with your loved ones, on a TV or a USB drive, the situation is very different. The risk mostly appears when the film is posted on a platform. Before choosing a specific song, ask yourself: will we post this film online?

How we handle it at Instant Impact

We talk about the music with you before editing, but you do not have to choose it: we take care of it, with music that suits the mood of your day. If you have a specific song in mind, tell us. In that case, you are responsible for the usage rights to that song, especially if you plan to post the film online. The film is delivered with a single soundtrack, because we do not make several edits with different music. These rules are in our terms of service.

What if the couple disagree on the song?

It happens often: one person wants a particular song, the other prefers something calmer. Our suggestion is to choose the mood rather than the title. Tell us whether you want something warm, joyful or cinematic, and we propose music that fits. That also keeps you away from the claims described above.

Practical advice

Keep your first dance song for the evening, where it shines. For the film, instrumental music with the right rhythm leaves room for the vows, the laughter and the sound of the day, which we record with a microphone. If you want to post a short version on social media, talk to us before editing: it is the best time to avoid unpleasant surprises.
